Central Bank of Nigeria CBN has issued license to 11 new International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs). This was disclosed in a statement released by the apex bank's Acting Director, Corporate Communications, Isaac Okorafor yesterday August 30th. The new entrants are joining Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria, which had been cleared by the CBN.
The new operators are Trans-Fast Remittance LLC; WorldRemit Limited, UAE Exchange Centre LLC; Wari Limited, Homesend S.C.R.L, Small World Financial Services Group Limited and Weblink International Limited. Others are Cash Pot Limited, DT&T Corporation Limited, Fiem Group LLC DBA Ping Express and CP Express Limited. According to the CBN, the new entrants were licensed as part of efforts to liberalise the Foreign Exchange Market, ensure liquidity and make foreign exchange more readily available to low end users.
Part of the statement reads
“The CBN wishes to state, unequivocally, that it has not foreclosed the licensing of interested players in the IMTO space in Nigeria. Therefore, interested applicants are required to forward their requests for licensing to the Director, Trade and Exchange Department of the CBN, in line with the CBN Guidelines on International Money Transfer Services in Nigeria (2014), which among other things, specifies the minimum technical and business requirements for various participants in the international money transfer services industry in Nigeria. The CBN remains committed to providing an enabling environment for international money transfer services in Nigeria. It is, however, important to emphasise that a prospective player shall first obtain the requisite licence to operate in Nigeria as an IMTO. The CBN wishes to advise Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora to beware of the unwholesome activities of some unlicensed IMTOs in Nigeria. This warning has become necessary because of the activities of some unregistered IMTOs, whose modes of operation are detrimental to the Nigerian economy".

Akili Ozizor, the quiet country home of Nigeria's former Aviation minister and presently the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial Zone,Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah, today (Monday)witnessed an unusual heavy vehicular and human movement when sympathisers, friends and dignitaries from across Anambra state rallied for vigil mass for the peaceful repose of the soul of late master Maxwell Chinedu, son of Senator Oduah who died last Friday at the age of 28.
The Archbishop of Onitsha and Metropolitan of Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province, Most Rev Valerian Okeke presided over the mass with other four priests concelebrating.
The Archbishop condoled with the entire family and described the death of Chinedu as a big trial moment for the family and urged them not to mourn as people without faith.
According to the Archbishop,it is not the age one lived that matters but what one achieved in his life time.
In his homily, the Episcopal Vicar of Dunukofia Region,Onitsha Archdiocese,Very Rev Fr Theophilus Odukwe likened the death of Chinedu to that of the Biblical John the Baptist whose life was cut short at a young age,a situation which he said faith had ordained.
Fr Odukwe pointed out that in many cases and particularly in history, many achievers in history concluded their earthly journeys early in life adding that God in his infinite wisdom called the late Chinedu home after concluding his earthly assignment.
He drew analogy on the vanity of life when he pointed out that neither wealth, power or money can give life but that God almighty gives life and takes as he wishes.
One of those who arrived early for the mass are the former Secretary to the Federal Government,Chief Anyim Pius Anyim,Anambra State PDP chairman,Chief Ken Emeakayi, former Onitsha South Local government Chairman,Chief Ejidike, the Chief of Staff,Princess Stella Oduah Foundation,Princess Nwaka Ononuju,Director of Stella Oduah Campaign Organisation,Chief Pandola Okwuosa, and many others.

Minister of Labor and Employment, Chris Ngige, has said that for any unemployed Nigerian to benefit from any of the social intervention scheme (SIS) of the government, they must register online as registration is now mandatory for job seekers and other empowerment programmes. Ngige stated this while flagging off the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) School-to-Work Programme in Calabar, Cross River State over the weekend.
He said this against the backdrop of different agencies of government laying claim to the ownership of the programmes.
“You must register to benefit from the Social Intervention Scheme. Unfortunately, as we speak, by last week, the portal has only recorded about 1.2 million persons. We expect more persons to have been registered in the portal before our screening exercise; the registration on the portal is Npower.ng.org.
The portal closes Aug. 31, which is just few days away. For those who are not computer literate, we advise state governments to encourage them by using local government chairmen to move into local government areas to register the unemployed persons there. So that they can qualify to be considered for the scheme. Each state of the federation is expected to recruit about 1, 500 persons’’ he said

There were reports online yesterday that the four surveyors that died in the boat mishap at the Egbe River in Ekiti state on Wednesday August 24th (read here), were World bank staff. The Third National Urban Water Sector Reform agency whose project the deceased persons were working on, this morning released a statement making the clarification that the deceased persons namely Alaran Tirimisiyu, Abdulwaheed Alayande, David Malu and Albert, were not staff members of the World bank. Read the statement below...
“The Unfortunate drowning of four workmen working as topo-surveyors on Egbe Dam is highly regretted and unfortunate and a loss too many. The Third National Urban Water Sector Reform Project is a project funded by the World Bank with a target to achieve maximum reform in Ekiti State water sector. While we lament the sad loss, we wish to state that the Consultant was awarded the assignment to carry out Bathymetry Survey of four dams in the state biz: Ureje, Egbe, Itapaji and Ero. The sad incident happened because some safety measures were not adhered to by the deceased: refusal to wear life jackets and those who survived wore life jackets provided by the company. It should be noted that neither World Bank official nor Water Corporation staff member was involved. Ekiti State Government commiserates with the families of the departed and pray God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.”

Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, says President Buhari must be having a good laugh over the arrest and trial of Chinakwe Joachim Iroko who named his dog Buhari. Read what Garba shared on his facebook wall below...
'I am thinking of saying, using my own handle that people linking the President to this dog incident are just displaying their ignorance of the type of person he is. He enjoys cartoons and likes sharing them. The ones he enjoys the most are those that caricature him. It is cheap and sensational to say he can order a police action against a caricature. When he picks a paper, the first page he reaches for is the cartoon page. He laughs and laughs. The President must be having a good laugh over this whole thing. People should listen to the real story behind this dog incident and to not waste precious time seeking the hand of the President in a laughable incident!'
Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu shared via his Facebook page. This is in reaction to the arrest and trial of the trader who named his Dog Buhari. Read the rest of what he wrote after the cut..
